New 2K Digital Restoration supervised by Terry Gilliam!
In this fantastic voyage through time and space from Terry Gilliam, a boy named Kevin (Craig Warnock) escapes his gadget-obsessed parents to join a band of time-traveling dwarfs. Armed with a map stolen from the Supreme Being (Ralph Richardson), they plunder treasure from Napoleon (Ian Holm) and Agamemnon (Sean Connery)—but the Evil Genius (David Warner) is watching their every move. Featuring a darkly playful script by Gilliam and his Monty Python cohort Michael Palin (who also appears in the film), Time Bandits is at once a giddy fairy tale, a revisionist history lesson, and a satire of technology gone awry.
Terry Gilliam's grandiose, darkly comic children's adventure from 1981 is a remarkable time-travel fantasy utilizing fantastic set design and homemade special effects to create a vivid, original universe. Part fairy tale, part science fiction and part comedy, Gilliam fills the screen with bizarre images, and directs with a breathless ingenuity. It's a strange and weird and wonderful mix of boy's own adventure, Python-esque humor, and grim irony, all wrapped in tall tales, ancient myths, and historical figures.
DANNY SAYS is a brand new documentary on the life and times of Danny Fields. Since 1966, Danny Fields has played a pivotal role in music and “culture” of the late 20th century: working for the Doors, Cream, Lou Reed, Nico, Judy Collins and managing groundbreaking artists like the Stooges, the MC5, the Modern Lovers and the Ramones. Danny Says follows Fields from Phi Beta Kappa whiz-kid, to Harvard Law dropout, to the Warhol Silver Factory, to Director of Publicity at Elektra Records, to “punk pioneer” and beyond. Danny’s taste and opinion, once deemed defiant and radical, has turned out to have been prescient. Danny Says is a story of marginal turning mainstream, avant garde turning prophetic, as Fields looks to the next generation.
Jonathan Richman will be on hand to introduce the screening and talk about his experiences with Danny Fields, The Velvet Underground and The Modern Lovers. If you are a music fan don’t even think about missing this one!
New 4K Digital Restoration by J.J. Abrams & Bad Robot!
To celebrate Art House Theater Day, Don Coscarelli’s 1979 supernatural horror classic returns to the big screen with remastered picture and sound! After a rash of suspicious deaths, two orphaned brothers (Michael Baldwin and Bill Thornbury) and the worlds coolest Good Humor Man (Reggie Bannister) investigate the weird activities at the local funeral parlor. Soon, the trio uncovers the deadly truth about its mysterious undertaker The Tall Man (a terrifyingly terrific Angus Scrimm). Thanks to help from super Phantasm fan J. J. Abrams, Coscarelli and a team of talented technicians from Abrams Bad Robot Productions have faithfully restored the film from its original elements. The results are breathtaking!
After the film is over, stick around for a live stream Q&A with director Don Coscarelli and original cast members. Plus, you’ll be treated to an exclusive clip from the upcoming Phantasm: Ravager!
